February 3rd- The First Post

I'm not exactly sure how I want to start this blog, so I'll start it the old-fashioned way... Hello and welcome to "Sports Knight", my own little corner of the blogosphere where this even-keeled sports fan puts up his own views in the goings on in the wide world of sports. I try to keep everything in perspective when I follow sports, and I try to view everything in a non-biased point of view, the key word being "try". I won't try to suggest that I am always right about everything, because I'm not. I'm just telling it as I see it and understand it. So with that in mind, here we go!

A Super-sized Sunday

Needless to say, the biggest story this week is Super Bowl XLIV between the Colts and the Saints, the biggest game of the year. The biggest spectacle in sports. A final grudge match between the last two teams standing, and when the dust settles, one will join the elite of elites, Super Bowl Champions. Whoop-de-flippin'-doo. -_-

I mean, I'm not saying that the Super Bowl is boring by any stretch, nor am I not impressed by it all. It's just that the buildup to the game is just....too much. All the special ESPN remotes, the annual tab of 30 seconds of commercial time during the game ($2.6 million dollars this year), the special interest stories, the feel-good player of the game, and the other bells and whistles that go along with the game getting the hype sky high, and 9 times out of 10, the actual game sucks! Thankfully the last few Super Bowls have been among some of the best ever, but usually the intensity of the hype almost never equals that of the actual game. I'll admit that the bells and whistles comes with the territory of a game that attracts 1 out of 4 Americans and countless more worldwide, but it's something I can do without personally. Let's just get to the actual game please?

Speaking of the actual game, I might as well get my pick in now, even though picking games is not my strong point, but here I go anyway. For starters, Peyton Manning is a robot. I mean, he is more than likely the most systematic quarterback in NFL history, and he's been showing it off this past year in the season and in the playoffs. The Colts just have a system of scoring against virtually any defense available thanks largely in part to #18 himself, so the Colts will get their points. So the question is can the Saints score on the Colts defense, especially is Dwight Freeney is unable to go. My guess is no. The Saints are just too good on offense when Drew Brees is running the show, and the Colts D haven't seen a QB of that caliber since Tom Brady and the week 10 game that they probably should have lost. So what does this mean for the 44th Super Bowl? OVERTIME!!! Yes, you heard me right, I say this game's going to OT, and whoever wins the coin flip wins the game. So I flipped a coin and it came up Saints. So my prediction is Saints by a field goal. That's my pick, take it or leave it.

"Sign your name across my heart..."
And here I thought the coverage for spring practices in college football were getting a tad bit ridiculous. It was national signing day and everyone waited on bended knee to see if their team's gonna suck for another year or two (apparently, the SEC got 10 times stronger AGAIN!). Talk about overkill much! And how the heck do you rank these things anyway? Florida, Texas, and Alabama are ESPN's 1-2-3, but what does that get them really? A moral victory? Yeah, tell yourself that after Oklahoma or Georgia upsets you to ruin your championship hopes. The fact of the matter is that a million or so things can go wrong on or off the field to negate any gains made by a football program today. Let's just welcome in the new kids on the block and let's not count our chickens before they hatch.

Well, that's about it for now. Catch y'all on the flip side!
